I don't have a back protector and don't plan on getting one so guess I'm not running level 3 anymore.RideSmart wrote:Level 3: Advanced
Our Level 3-Advanced group is intended for the club racer, very accomplished track rider and students taking the Advanced Rider's Course. The seat time required in L2-Intermediate to ride in L3-Advanced varies greatly from rider to rider. There is no set number of L2-Intermediate track days you must complete to ride in L3-Advanced. However, you must request evaluation by the lead instructor in L2-intermediate prior to moving to/registering for L3-Advanced or participate in the Advanced Riders Course for instruction and evaluation.
The following criteria must be met to ride in the L3-Advanced Group:
1.Comfortable with close-proximity passes which includes inside passing in corners; and
2.Comfortable with high rates of speed and hard braking; and
3.Maintain proper body position, braking control, throttle control, holding the RACE line, staying predictable and other riding techniques presented in L1 and L2 classes; and
4.Adhere to all rules pertinent to the group; and
5.Maintain a consistent lap time that is at or faster than the times set forth below:
•MSRH - 2:00 Minutes
•TWS - 2:12 Minutes
•ECR - 2:15 Minutes
•MSRC - 1:35 Minutes
Failure to meet these requirements may result in being bumped out of the L3-Advanced group. Riders not keeping the pace and/or riding erratic lines will be policed out and returned to the L2-Intermediate Group pending space availability. If no space in is available in Level 2, you will be asked to wait until a spot becomes available. If a spot does not become available you will not be permitted to ride and no refunds will be given.
Riders in this group MUST wear a back protector.

Re: New Level 3 requirements
You guys aren't wearing back protectors on the track???
Wow. Just...wow.
I have enough back trouble as-is. I can't imagine the sort of life-long pain I'd have with a broken spine.
All my jackets have back protectors, and my race leathers have the CE level 2 protector and add-on chest protectors from Alpinestars.

Re: New Level 3 requirements
I dunno about those laptimes. Solo I would do 1:25-1:30s at MSRC, and when I ran L3 I was the slow guy. 1:35 seems really slow for L3.

Yeah, 1:35 is pretty slow for L3. Next thing RS will be requiring a neck brace too.

Re: New Level 3 requirements
There was a thread over on motodfw about it.
The time was set to 1:30 but they had some push back from people saying they hit all of the times on all of the other tracks but not MSRC so they lowered the time. They also stated it was the MINIMUM time and not the only requirement.

Don't have one and never saw the need to get one. The thing that it protects you from, bending to far backwards, it a pretty low probability injury and seeing what I've already survived, with no back injury, I don't see it as a big safety issue. Perhaps someday I'll get one or more likely get a new suit that has it built in.fixxervi6 wrote:Just curious why you don't want to use a back protector?

A back protector protects you from spine impacts, not bending too far backward.
That's got to be the nuttiest thing I've heard since the Harley guys believing a helmet will snap your neck in a crash.
Re: New Level 3 requirements
Yeah, it offers very little 'bending backwards' protection. Just grab a back protector and bend it backwards... it will flex that way (and likely snap itself not just your back). As Rhino says, it's from impact injuries, not just you flying off landing on your back on something, but also from things hitting your back (like your own bike during a high-side), or another rider...
The only thing a back protector bothered me with is it made my leathers fit tighter, but that's about it. It wasn't really that much more hot to wear one in a full leather suit. Some of the more premium race suits have them built-in... I think Alpinestars was making a universal insert type to go in the back pocket of your suit / jacket.

Re: New Level 3 requirements
Yeah, I have an Alpinestars suit and their Bionic race back protector. The suit has 3 snaps at the top and there's a snap at the top of the back protector, then there's a kidney belt on the back protector.
I agree it sucks that it makes your leathers fit a little tighter, but if you're going to always wear a back protector (which you should), it makes sense to size your leathers appropriately.
