Somewhere along the ride yesterday

Post by toy752 » Mon Apr 30, 2012 4:04 pm

I acquired some glass in my tire. There is no air loss from this hole. Do I need to replace the tire or just keep an eye on it?

I would say, if the puncture is no deaper than the tread you'll be fine, espically if you're simply riding on the street.

I had something very very similar happen to me, even bigger. Darc is right if it's not deeper, don't worry about it, but keep an eye on it. I was going to replace my tires, but ended up using every bit of them. I wouldn't suggest any hard hard riding though

I am just learning how to do some hard riding as you can tell by my strips. It kind of sucks because I only have 3000 miles on these tires. Ugh

As said if the cut is not deaper than the tread, no need to worry. But get the piece of glass pulled out.

If the hole is no deeper than the tread I'd run it, and run the piss out of it, but that's just me.

Don't worry about chicken strips, they are not an indicator of how fast you are able to ride, and having NO chicken strips on your street tires is an indication of someone seeking a darwin award OR poor body position, or both.

I plan on having them just smaller than they have been. I have been looking at some leathers for some track days. Damn y'all for getting me interested!!!

Make sure you get the glass out. If you keep riding with it in there, it will just get pushed deeper until it eventually punctures the tire.

It's probably just stuck in the thick rubber tread right now, in which case there's zero problem with the tire. Pull it out and keep an eye on your pressures. If it doesn't have a slow leak you're fine.

I also agree with Fixxer about the chicken strips. You shouldn't be wearing them down on the street. Always ride with something in reserve on the street. Save the max lean stuff for the track.

The part of your tire that hasn't touched the pavement. Look at your tires, you'll see strips on the outside that aren't worn like the middle is, because you're not leaning your bike to the very edges of the tires.

The name implies that the lean angle you've actually achieved is where you "chicken out" and don't lean any more.

Wearing down your chicken strips completely on the street is dumb. Wearing them down at the track is the point. :D

It's the un used portion of the tire on the edges, if you have chicken strips then that means your not leaning all the way over, cause your chicken.

It's fun to poke at each other over them but the reality is they are not an idicator of speed or skill.

I've gotten my chicken strip down to like 1/16" on my track tires, but I've never had chicken strip smaller than 1/4" on my street tires and that's pushing it harder than I should.

People that have 0 chicken strip on their street tires means they are really pushing it, one patch of bad pavement sand or anything and that ride is over in a hury - OR they have really bad body posistion, for example leaning to the outside of the turn instead of to the inside.

I like to use chicken strips as a BS indicator. When some kid shows up at bike night and mouths off about how he was dragging a knee on the interstate last weekend and he's got 1" chicken strips, it's pretty obvious he's full of it.

Maybe, nothing stopping him from crawling down the side of his bike and just putting his knee on the ground while going in a straight line :D

And to add to the chicken strip stuff, different tires are capable of different lean angles so not all chicken strips are equal.

I've had my katana over to the point it was actually eating at the side walls on the tires, but those were touring tires, and not good ones at that.

I've had 2Ct's to the edge with knee on the ground

yet on my Q2's I have a thin line of unused tire around the outside edge, and that's with me picking up my knee and continuing to increase lean angle AFTER the puck touches down.

I'd pay $5 to see someone do that.

Hah, nice!

On the point of chicken strips, a lot of tire manufactures give you things to wear off, like little michelin men, elephants, arrows, etc. When you've had enough track days those little guys don't last long :-)

on that same point, you'll also hear some people refered to as chasing the elephant, or elephant chasers. I think it's Metzler that puts little elephants out on the edge of the tire. And that's what people are referring to.
