Led turn signals problem

Post by Polokid69 » Thu Aug 16, 2012 11:01 am

I hooked up my new tail light with integrated signals. A couple of issues, first tail and break work great and tun signals work but are a little slow, not sure why. Main problem is that while the new integrated signals work, the front on comes on and just stays solid but no blink. Now the front are the stock signals. I have just got but haven't installed , a pair of front flush mount LEDs .if I install the new ones which will mean all signals will be LEDs , so will this fix my problem? Also, will I need to replace the stock relay with an electronic relay or anything else ?

Ah, the outage problem. All DOT approved vehicles have to provide a way to inform the driver that your bulb has burned out. The flasher senses current draw, and if it doesn't get enough (LEDs don't draw as much current as incandescent), it flags it as outage. Most vehicles do this by keeping the remaining blinkers on, so when you hit your blinker, the arrow stays on, as does the turn signal. In your case, the LEDs are staying on because your flasher doesn't detect enough current draw. I saw something similar that caused my LEDs to flash incredibly fast (2-3 pulses a second).

There are really only two ways to fix this. One, which works but kinda defeats the purpose, is to install load resistors to pull more draw. This makes the resister and LED bulbs combined draw as much power as an incandescent bulb, and act and flash just like the old bulbs. This isn't the best method, because it still pulls the same amount of power, and in turn creates heat energy from the resistor.

The best option is to replace your flasher with one that is LED-capable. If you look around online I'm sure you'll find tons of 'blinker fixers' or flasher relay replacements.

Here's one now, says the Universal fixes on the Ninja 250R. I believe you would need 4 of these?

That is an electronic relay which you should need only one. It would replace the stock relay. Only need one.

Yeah, wasn't sure where it connected, if that was in line between each blinker or what. An electrical engineer I am not, I just remember running into the issue with running automotive bulbs and got enough information to be dangerous :-)

I have the stock relay on the SV and only one set of resisters installed on the front set of blinkers (mirrors and sides wired to the same resistor). Rear LEDs are wired with no resistors. So there is less current draw anyway, just not as much of a drop if you use an electronic relay.

My LEDS give me a lamp error on my dash.... good thing I just had to go to the settings and turn the lamp test off so it dont tell me that anymore! YAY!

I ended up changing the flasher for an electronic one and the resistor kit, now it works perfect! All lights blink, front flush mounts are set to strobe and looks really cool!
