Glass Etching

Post by DarcShadow » Thu Mar 07, 2013 9:23 am

Discovered this week that with the help of my vinyl cutter I can make some pretty sweet eatching templates and etch glass pretty easily. I did a test etching on a cheap glass from good will and it turned out really well. So if you have some glasses you wanted etched let me know I'd be happy to works something out with you.

Silly DS, you can't make a candle out of glass, it won't burn. :D

But seriously, that's bad ass.

There's a chemical stuff you buy at Hobby Lobby or Michael's, you just dip / brush it on, looks kinda like paste and etches glass wherever it touches, so you mask off wherever you don't want it, so D.S. basically used vinyl to mask everything that he didn't want etched.

I played with that stuff years and years ago, it makes nifty little wallhangings when you etch framed mirrors, etc. Chicks dig it.

Yeah, buddy of mine etched his rear window of his jeep with the stuff. Making the mask is the hard part. When he was in town last week he wondered how well the vinyl cutter would work for making masks. It works pretty damn well. ha! I'm still not 100% happy with the results and have a few ideas on how to make the etch look better. I've got some more glass candles I plan to experiment on.

I've stepped my etching game up a notch and purchased an Air Eraser. It's a mini sand blast tool so I can now etch anything and the results on glass look a lot better than the etching cream.

Here's a plastic tumbler I just made for practice and to see how it would work on plastic.

Some people will use any excuse to buy candles. I thought it was only my wife.

Seriously cool though, once you take your company public, can some of us get in on the ground floor? I can see you being the Mark Zuckerberg of Decals and Glass etching.

Then aluminum should be easy, yes? Would you have a problem etching the Triumph logo on my radar detector bracket? If not a problem, how long would you need it?

Should be able to. I could probably do it over a weekend.

Possibly. Not sure it'd fit in my home made blast tub. I could do it outside of the tub but it would make a huge mess and I'd not be able to reuse the blast media. I could give it a go though. Maybe use a large cardboard box and do it out in the yard. Would have to wait till it warms up though, to damn cold to be doing something like that outside.

Let me know the dimensions if you have trouble finding a larger cardboard box, I might be able to hook you up with something, not sure.

Door to my smoker. When I get a team logo designed, I want to get it etched in the doors.

The team is going to be called Misfired Bullets, so the rhino is pretty far down the list of good logos. It's somewhere between a dancing banana and a picture of a dead cat with a "get well soon" sign.
