Trailer for the poor like me.

Post by DemonDuck » Wed May 22, 2013 6:25 am

I am thinking about getting one of these. In the end I figure maybe $450 total with everything I would add to it and it folds. Tell me what you think.

I wish I could find the write up on a guy who bought this. One thing you have to keep regular maintenance on is the greasing of the bearings. They tend to get hot

I found a write up of a guy who made one. He did mention the bearings ... He said as soon as you get it together use a really good quality grease and pump it in till the stuff they come with is flushed out. Of course if it is really bad then replacing the bearings with a higher quality wouldnt be hard or expensive.

Of course I would love to get one like Striple's but that will have to wait for another day.

That's the same one as what Meat of Snail has, isn't it?

Nevermind... That one sold. But there are plenty of cheap trailers out there. I may check out a $200 one in Mckinney

DD, if you're willing to spend $500, you can find a better trailer than that on CL. Plus, if you're willing to spend just a bit more, then you're able to get something that you can plan on keeping longterm without worries.

Yeah, I've seen older single rail Kendons go for $700-800.

It's always just "a little bit more".

I looked into the Harbor Freight trailers back in the day and found you've got to upgrade the wheels & bearings pretty early on, as they aren't built to run 75mph down the freeway. So that put me looking in the $500 range. I in turn found that it was actually cheaper to rent a u-haul trailer with a built in gate ramp for 24 hours ($18/day). So... I could rent a trailer 27 times for the cost of buying a trailer, and even when I was racing I was only doing maybe 12 events a year (including track days), so it would have been over 2 years of renting before owning would have paid off... and, to add to the cost, ramps to get the bike on the trailer, and finally, I didn't have garage space so I would have ended up having to rent a space at like $10 /mo to park it. Anyways, long story short, I think I calculated it out to be far more expensive to own a $500 trailer than it was to rent when I needed it.

That's the trailer that MeatofSnail has. I can't speak to the bearings, etc. But it is a good trailer, and tracks well. I borrowed it a couple of times, from the guy that sold it to MoS, and borrowed it from MoS for COTA.

I picked up a nice 5x8 Texas Bragg trailer that was pretty shitty looking for $425 from the local United Rental place. After stripping it, replacing the floor, and repainting it with bed liner paint, it looks brand new. Built much better than most of the trailers shown. Talk to some places that rent them and see if they have any they want to sell.
