How do you get/stay in shape?

Post by DLSGAP » Mon Jun 17, 2013 9:06 am

As some of you know, I'll be attending a police academy this fall and while round is a shape, it's not the one I need to be in. Also, perhaps more importantly, the leathers I just bought (in the same size that fit perfectly 4 years ago) won't work with my current waistline. I've cut down sugar intake and reduced my soda intake to next to nothing.

Anyone have any tips to drop inches in the mid section quick? I'd like to possibly get a couple trackdays in before the academy starts in august. Not to mention, I don't wanna get my ass handed to me in class

Without going into everything just be consistent at the gym. Cut out cokes and just drink water. That's something everyone should do.

Cardio + (calories in calories out)

I lost 25+lbs with that, would have kept it off but shit went south at work so I started eating real bad and drinking (woodchuck has lots of calories)

I've found that (for me) the most effective way to drop weight and gain fitness is by running. I've played a lot of sports all of my life, and nothing has ever even come close to the effect that running has on my body. Pick up a training plan for a 5k online, and just follow it. Many of them are designed for people that are currently unable to run much of any distance at all, and will gradually build up your endurance and your pace, just by you following the plan. You will be amazed by the transformation of your body! Sign up for a 5k to help with keeping you motivated through the process. Contrary to popular belief, most 5k (and even 10k) runs are perfect for people who are just getting back into shape, and are mostly attended by mortals (and very few actual competitive runners).

Through collage I was in a martial arts club. It only met 3 times a week but that kept you in really good shape. Most martial arts school though don't to as much conditioning as the one in collage. Find a good kick boxing school though and it'll whip you into shap pretty quick.

Bicycling hardcore, to where I'm breathing heavy and sweating for a solid hour. That's the most effective for me, supplemented by weight / strength training.

I'm thinking this may be the best route for me. Been looking at getting a hybrid or mountain bike for a while and there are some trails near me i could wear myself out on. Or would I have to go all lance on it?

Cardio is good, but do some reasearch. While any activity is going to good for you, there's an ideal heart rate/duration if you want to focue on weight loss.

I actually threw the donuts out after one bite. And the drink isn't TOO bad.

The old mantra for any diet is the same. Diets NEVER work. Diets imply something you do for a short period, then you can go back to whatever you were doing before. You have to change your eating habits, exercise habits, and adapt new ones for life. That's the only way to be successful. That being said, the simplest, but most effective saying is 100% truth. Want to lose weight? Eat less, move more.

Its not really eating less and moving more. To burn fat efficiently and not burn muscle, you have to eat more of the right stuff and of course move the right stuff. Like to build muscle = 1 gram of protein per pound of weight through the day. or just do the paleo diet = meat, vegies and fruit. I'm trying to put on muscle right now so I'm eating 6 to 7 times a day and lots of protein(fish, lots of chicken, lean beef). I know i've lost a little fat and gained some muscle but if i go by the scale, i havent changed a bit.

All said is good. I can say from experience if it's the belly you want to lose. There is only 1 way, you have to work your abs. I've gone through proper diet and excersice before, lost weight, slimmed down, and not lost the gut because I don't like doing crunches and what not.

Best thing is not diets, but a combination of ... a proper diet (a.k.a eating right constantly), a good cardio exercise (biking or running), and to lose the gut doing your ab work outs (crunches, etc.). That'll slim you down, and get rid of the gut. But since you'll be going to the academy I'd recommend a full strength building workout. <- I say this from experience. Get you a gym membership, go ahead and drop the money on a trainer for two or three weeks to get started, but tell them what your doing, and then follow the workout regiment they layout until you go to the academy.

Nah fool. Abs are made in the "kitchen". You can do a million set ups, but if your not getting below that certain body fat percentage then it won't happen. Eat right and right all the time. Get below 17% or so and they will start to show

Don't quote me on the percentage

Buy the book Body for Life. It works and covers both diet and exercise. Plus the exercise is only 30 min a day or something like that.

For fast weight loss now.... Myoplex Advantage shakes. 3x a day and drink lots of water. Take calcium supplements and potasium supplement. You can loose 20-30 lbs in a week or 2. Not saying it is the best for ya but it is quick weight loss.
