Geocaching 3/28 (Saturday)

Post by Telomere » Tue Mar 17, 2015 12:38 pm

I have to be in the Denton area on March 28th so depending on the weather, I will be geocaching for most of the day just north of Denton. If it is raining, I won't be geocaching (just an FYI). I have a real GPS to geocache with and I have geocached many times. This is not new to me. I do NOT use a geocache app for the phone (they are less accurate than an actual GPS). If you are interested in geocaching with me and my kids (maybe some of the boys in my den), let me know.

I have to drop Cait's bff off at UNT for her TAMS interview by 8am. I think shortly after I drop her off, I will begin geocaching.

Do you know how to put coordinates into your GPS?

Yep & i have a pretty good idea how to operate it, but that's only reading the manual. I have zero experience in actually using it, not even a bit!

Okay, I've been curious and must be the only one who doesn't know...so instead of Googling it, WHAT the heck is geocaching?

Basically, it like "treasure hunting" for either a nature formation, a box with stuff in it, or a place using coordinates only to find it with the help of a GPS unit.

I would like to get some military quality maps and teach the kids land nav using this stuff one day. You know like the Marines did for me. Here is your map.... on your map it shows your starting point. Here is a list of coordinates and a map pen .... mark the coordinates and plot a route. Then using your map and this compass get to each spot and take 1 of what you find then meet at the finish point with all items. Fun stuff.

Yes I know we did also. But it was a little more difficult in the Marines. And in ways more fun.

Military teaches this to all. I learned it in the Army. I am also teaching this skill to my boys but not while geocaching.

Yea I didn't intend to offend the lesser branches of service by making it sound like it was a Marines only thing. :SideSplittingLaughter:

I do want to do some Geocaching to see if its something I would find fun.... it just made that thought pop into my head. I had no doubt you would be teaching that type of thing to your troops Telomere seeing as it will be a very valuable tool once the zombie apocalypse hits.

Next week, I am teaching the boys how to use a compass to get bearings. Once they get that down, we will upgrade to topographical maps and compasses :)
