Hey how long is this opportunity available?
Also, by free leathers, do you mean a rental, or new/unused and to keep?

It's been 4 or 5 years since I have been on track. Does that make me a noobie?

Re: TRACK CURIOUS?
What about a group newbie track day for all of us who have never been before and then have some of the senior citizens err..track riders go to show us the ropes? I've never done one, but am interested.. just don't even know where to start.

Get a code and sign up. That is step one. Worry about the other steps after step one is complete.stoney812 wrote:What about a group newbie track day for all of us who have never been before and then have some of the senior citizens err..track riders go to show us the ropes? Get the code, sign up, go to the ride smart thread and say I am signed up and new - show up with us then just have fun.

I think you need to prove that you are a senior citizen first, though. Where's the card that says you are?

Re: TRACK CURIOUS?
If you are wanting to ride MSR Cresson then you need to decide if this group newbie track day will be Aug 1st (1.7 CCW), Aug 2nd (1.7 CCW), Nov 8th (1.3 CCW), or Nov 9th(1.7 CCW). You may also want this to be at ECR but the only dates for ECR are Sept 5th and 6th and Oct 3rd and 4th. If you truly want a newbie group track day, get on all of the noobs now and pick a date and track.stoney812 wrote:What about a group newbie track day for all of us who have never been before and then have some of the senior citizens err..track riders go to show us the ropes? My smart-aleck sister-in-law had AARP mailing start to my house when I turned either 40 or 45, but at 50 I actually signed up, but then I let is lapse. Does that count?

No, AARP doesn't count. It doesn't say "Senior Citizen" with your mugshot on it.LonestarCBR wrote:My smart-aleck sister-in-law had AARP mailing start to my house when I turned either 40 or 45, but at 50 I actually signed up, but then I let is lapse. Does that count?

Re: TRACK CURIOUS?
What is 1.7 and 1.3 CCW? I'm liking the November idea as the thought of being wrapped up inside a cow in August doesn't sound super appealing. I'd perfer to survive my first time and not end up as just a puddle of sweat on the middle of the track. Where is ECR and what's better? Cresson or ECR?Telomere wrote: If you are wanting to ride MSR Cresson then you need to decide if this group newbie track day will be Aug 1st (1.7 CCW), Aug 2nd (1.7 CCW), Nov 8th (1.3 CCW), or Nov 9th(1.7 CCW). Re: TRACK CURIOUS?
1.3 is the smaller, more technical track. CCW means counter-clockwise. They do run the 1.7 clockwise but not often. I think it is for CMRA races (where is striple, he knows more about this). The 1.7 CCW goes from tight, slow turns to faster turns but if you do it clockwise, it is a different track.

Re: TRACK CURIOUS?
ECR is Eagle's Canyon Raceway about 12 miles north of Decatur on FM51.
They were going to shut it down for repaving this summer, but that appears to be on hold. Striple is probably the best source of info on ECR's current status.
Toy rides the same bike as you, and has done numerous track days on it, so he'd be good person to ask in regard to the Ninja 1000 on the track. He's ridden both tracks at Cresson.

Re: TRACK CURIOUS?
Personally I won't ride ECR unless they fix it. Too many incidents on that track due to poor surface conditions. Lonestar can attest to that...

Re: TRACK CURIOUS?
In all fairness to ECR, riding with my head up my ass was the biggest problem I had...but yes, it does offer a few "surface challenges" you don't find at Cresson. Plus ECR is more physical work than Cresson. And for me, it's at least twice as far, but not for most of the DFW area riders.nitzer wrote:Personally I won't ride ECR unless they fix it. I will say this, the really nice thing about my time at ECR is that it was on a member's only day with private instruction. So at least if my dumbass was falling off, I didn't have a gaggle right behind me trying to squash me even further.

Re: TRACK CURIOUS?
Surface quality at ECR has been problem for the past few years, but they have been trying to schedule some major repairs, which has not materialized as of right now. I just rode ECR on Sunday, and it is very much rideable for practice. I was coaching a new racer, and we had no problems at all getting around the track at a reasonably quick pace. ECR can be troublesome when there is water on the track, but that hasn't been the case in some time now. Also, T2 and T6 are affected by surface problems, which simply means that you cannot go 105% into those turns right now. Other than that, it is perfectly usable to work on your skill sets.
stoney, any of the local tracks would be great to have your first track day at. Cresson's 1.7-mile configuration is usually run counterclockwise (CCW), but RideSmart tends to run that track clockwise (CW) once or twice a year. The clockwise configuration is more technical, and thus a bit more challenging. The 1.3-mile track is run CCW, and is very technical and tight, which is best for smaller bikes. You'll still have fun on a larger bike, but won't be able to utilize much of its power anywhere.
