Mesh pants
Anyone have any experience with mesh pants, the ones that have protective pads in the them?
I'm looking for something better than jeans but not as hot as leather.

Re: Mesh pants
I have a pair of TourMaster mesh pants. I haven't gone down in them yet but they seem like they will protect well enough. Probably not if I was going 80+ mph, though. They are kind of pricey, too.

Re: Mesh pants
First gear armored mesh top and bottom zip together (if it's not zip together don't waste your money). They are also a lot more comfortable to ride in than jeans.
They have held up better than any other gear I have owned so far to wear and tear, I crashed in them at ~35mph and they came out looking like nothing happened, the padded armor sure saved me some pain.
I dunno if I'd be too happy eating it at 100 in it, but I'd rather have that then jeans.

I have Olympia, Fieldsheer, and Joe Rocket and it depends on your style of riding. Touring up to intermediate pace they are awesome. Anything more aggressive I wouldn't trust them.

Re: Mesh pants
I saw a decent pair at Cycle gear yesterday, probably their house brand but had amour and the zipper in back to connect to jacket . I believe my bult jacket has the matching zipper so the can zip together . I think it was on sale for $89

Re: Mesh pants
Just be aware mesh isn't end all, it will fail much sooner than leather.
I "feel" so much better in leather, I feel safer, but yea, it's TX, so I own mesh too.

Re: Mesh pants
I've got a pair of tourmaster pants but sadly (or happily) they don't fit me. When they did fit my waist, the knee armor would hang down over my shins. I tried pinning them up but it didn't really work all that well. I would love a pair of mesh pants for the ride tomorrow but I don't see it happening unless I can con my wife into running to CycleGear before tomorrow morning.

Re: Mesh pants
I pulled the trigger and got the mesh pants plus the heat out shirt and shorts so hopefully I will be a tad cooler than in my leathers . Now I find I have mold in my Camelbak and not sure I can even clean it

Re: Mesh pants
There are bottle brushes made specifically for camelbaks. I had one from Bicycles Inc in Hurst. They do have other locations so I am not sure if you just want to purchase a new bladder or buy a bottle brush and try to clean the mold out (they also have bladder hangers so after you clean it, it can dry without sticking closed).

Re: Mesh pants
Good point, this is a good ride for camel back's, it's amazing how dehydrated you can get by only drinking at the gas stops. On a ride this long hydration is important.

The only thing useful from a camel for tomorrow's ride are its humps forget its back.

Re: Mesh pants
Pro tip--store your camelbak bladders in your freezer. They don't develop mold that way.
I have two 3L bladders that I use when I teach in the summer. I drink about 1L per hour to stay decently hydrated.

Re: Mesh pants
Pro-pro tip. Freeze your camel back the night before(don't fill all the way, remember it expands). It will melt throughout the day keeping your back cool and the water as well. Do this in the dead of summer

Re: Mesh pants
I've done that too, didn't like it. It didn't melt all the way before I was out of water. Ice water on the other hand stays cold. Backup bladder goes in an insulated bag which keeps it cold enough until I swap bladders halfway through a range day.

Re: Mesh pants
I just fill up with cold water from the gas stations we stop at. Easy.

Re: Mesh pants
Just picked up a pair of the $89 Bilt mesh pants, which zip to my Bilt jacket. THEY FIT PERFECTLY, and the knee armor doesn't slide down, I LOVE them!

I might be heading down there before they close so I am not the only weirdo donning leather in temps that are going to possibly reach 100 degrees but I hate Friday traffic.
