And while Waterworld wasn't as bad as many say, it was obviously a complete rip-off of Mad Max 2.
And I agree DS, why the hell does hollywood produce so few movies with new and original plot lines? It sickens me that they churn out remakes over and over instead of creating new franchises.
But then again movies are a business and short sighted executives would rather produce bad movies with a guaranteed audience than risk money on a movie with a new storyline that might not make money.
Just look back at Jaws. Huge risk, huge return. Cultural icon. Could have gone either way though.

I liked Waterworld. It wasn't great, but it was good. I hated Jaws. Never saw The Postman.

I don't really need anything socially redeeming in my movies...just entertainment, and sometimes it doesn't even take much of that.

I ended up watching a business show that was talking about the movie industry while getting the service done on my truck. It was what they had on in the lobby at the dealership. It was interesting to hear the statistics. Don't quote me on the numbers because I don't recall them exactly. But they were talking about the movie industries income and it producing movies. The basic break down of what they were saying is...
something like 60% of the movie industries income is derived from Asia. Thus their main revenue source that they want to tap is the Asian market. With what the Asia market likes, they have shifted to creating more visually stunning movies, on which they can create franchises and sequels that will continually sell in that market.
And that is how we ended up with now 7 Fast & Furious movies, when there only needed to be one; and the transformer series when there only needed to be one; and 4 mad max movies; etc..

Crap, I liked the Postman too. I was thinking Waterworld. Got my Kevin Costner movies mixed up.

Hey, God Father, Star Wars, The Matrix, Back to the Future, The Bourne Trilogy, Mexico Trilogy, etc.. There are some story lines that merit a trilogy. But 7.... F'ing 7 Fast & Furious movies??? Are you F'ing kidding me? The first one was good, but it was a novelty. There was no story line there worth making 6 more. Thank of it this way, pick your favorite drink, I'm going to use cigars as an example. I try a cigar, it's ok, it's good constructions, a decent smoke, not complex, doesn't really fit my pallet and likings and is IMO overpriced... Would I smoke it again? Sure. Would I buy it again? NO! That was F&F, would I watch the movie again sure it was alright, but would I pay to go to the theater and watch it again.. HELL NO! There is something better at a better price point available.LonestarCBR wrote:And three Godfather movies, right? And Transformers; when you kill the main/only bad guy in the first movie, there is nothing to merit a trilogy. Come On.

I think I see the problem, you're obviously just more hi-brow than I. Like I said earlier, I don't require much sociallly redeeming, and I'm easily entertained.WillK675 wrote:Hey, God Father, Star Wars, The Matrix, Back to the Future, The Bourne Trilogy, Mexico Trilogy, etc.. I should have already come to this realization when I see posts of fine cigars and expensive liquors. The only cigar I ever smoked was a Swisher Sweet (if it even qualifies), and there was no telling what was in the few whiskey and cokes I drank at a young age.

Re: Mad Max - Another one
I'm entertained just as the most. Again, I liked the first F&F.. The rest just never interested me. It's a one and done with that. It was good, it was entertaining, and I liked it. But it just wasn't a great movie worth 6 follow-ups. And admittedly I have seen none of the 6 follow ups. But from the trailers for all of them, they did not peak my interest.
And I'm far from hi-brow. But I do know how to appreciate the good things that life has to offer over the normal everyday. Why waste time with crap when life has better to offer, and sometimes cheaper than the crap.

I watched all the F&F except 7 and I am sure I will watch 7. All of them are decent movies IMHO but I didn't see any of them at the theater. In fact I don't see many movies at the theater though. I think I might average 1 move every 2 years at the theater. I am usually ok with waiting for it to come out on Netflix or whatever and watching it at home.

Saw it last night. It's amazing. Probably the best action movie I've seen this decade.
