What to do with the RF1100

Post by MattStrada » Fri Sep 21, 2012 12:38 pm

Well when I was looking at the RF1100's I really didn't like any of the graphics so I decided to not spend money on something I don't like. So now the dilemma, what to do to the helmet. It's matte black so I would like something with a little reflectivity to it. Lets hear your thoughts.

Thought it would be funny to have a yellow Autobot sticker on the side since the gf always calls my bike bumblebee. Yes I realize how corny and retarded that would be.

I can't see the image here at work but I should be able to do something.

As for decals on a helmet, I did some for dragonfly that turned out really good and some Superman ones for El Diabro that turned out pretty good. Pretty much if you can find a graphic or even a photo I can turn it into a decal. :) I don't currently have any reflective vinyl, stuff if freakin expensive! I am planning on getting some blue reflective, and I might be able to be convinced to get some black reflective if there is interest in it from a few people.

Alright I was thinking yellow reflective, how expensive are we talking? Still need to figure out a design to go with might just do two racing stripes down the center

If you're just wanting stripes you can probably find some tape at an autostore that'll get the job done. Reflective Vinyl is about $100 for an 15"x10yrd roll so unless several people are wanting something made out of reflective vinyl all the same color I'm not thrilled about shelling out that much just to me a couple of decals.

Yeah, it kind of sucks when you want to just get a small sample to see how things work. But this kind of stuff is ment more for sign shops not hobbiest.

There are a zillion vinyl vendors out there, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find one that will sell you a smaller quantity.

Fair point, I forgot about a page I found that will sell some stuff in 1' increments. It's a quite a bit more costly per foot that way. But would be good for small projects. I could get enough yellow vinyl to completely cover the helmet for about $30.

You said flat black...is it that rubbertone stuff? Just wondering how well stickers would "stick" to that kind of material if it is.

My Variant is rubatone, should stick just fine. It's still smooth, not a textured finish.

My RF1000 is that way, and it has held a sticker for years just fine.

Well if you want to do a custom vinyl thing, this place sells vinyl by the foot, http://www.hhsignsupply.com/productcart/pc/home.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Get a foot or so of what ever you like and I can cut it for you.

That is pretty sweet, but not something you're going to be able to do with vinyl, at least not easily. Getting a strip to form to the curves like that one does is not easily done and would probably require very thin vinyl and probably some heat while applying to get it to form correctly. You'd be better off going the painting route for that design.

Do you happen to have any pictures of what can be done with vinyl. I'm definitely ignorant on this topic.

For the most part if you can think of it, it can be cut. Here's a few things I've made so far.
http://darcshadow.fwmr.net/gallery/main ... emId=26528" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A flat surface works best for putting them on. When you start to get into curved surfaces it's best if the decal is kept small. The Superman logo on the helmet it about as big as I'd suggest going, even it has a few little wrinkles due to the curved surface.

Speaking of examples,
Miles, did you ever take a photo of your scream after you put it on?
2track, do you have a photo of your logo on the bike you could send me?
